parchment paper    →   pergamentni papir

Parchment paper is impermeable paper obtained by dipping cellulosic paper in the sulphuric acid.

pectin    →   pektin

Pectins are complex highmolecular carbohydrates, formed mostly from galacturonic acid. They are present in many kinds of fruit and vegetable and are used in the production of fruit jellies.

plain salt    →   jednostavna sol

Plain salt is a salt that contains only metal ions (or ammonium ions) and acid radical. It is created when all ions of hydrogen in an acid are replaced with ions of metal (or ammonium ions).

polyamide    →   poliamid

Polyamides are copolymers formed by condensation polymerization of monomers of dycarboxyl acid with a monomer of diamine, for example nylon.

electrophoresis    →   elektroforeza

Electrophoresis is a technique for the analysis and separation of colloids, based on the movement of charged colloidal particles in an electric field. The migration is toward electrodes of charge opposite to that of the particles. The rate of migration of the particles depends on the field, the charge on the particles, and on other factors, such as the size and shape of the particles.

Electrophoresis is important in the study of proteins. The acidity of the solution can be used to control the direction in which a protein moves upon electrophoresis.

Erbium was discovered by Carl Gustaf Mosander (Sweden) in 1843. Named after Ytterby, a village in Sweden. It is soft, malleable, silvery metal. Reacts slowly with water. Dissolves in acids. Metal ignites and burns readily. Erbium is found with other heavier rare earths in xenotime and euxenite. Erbium oxide is used in ceramics to obtain a pink glaze. Also a few uses in the nuclear industry and as an alloying agent for other exotic metals.

Esters are organic compounds formed by a reaction between alcohol and acids. Esters formed from carboxylic acids have the general formula RCOOR’. Triesters, molecules containing three ester groups, occur in nature as oils and fats.

ether    →   eter

Ethers are organic compounds with a formula R-O-R, where R is not equal to H. They may be derived from alcohols by elimination of water, but the major method is catalytic hydration of olefins. They are volatile highly flammable compounds; when containing peroxides they can detonate on heating. The term ether is often used synonymously with diethyl ether.

Reactivity series or activity series is a series of elements (usually metals) ranked by their reactivity degree, made for comparison of reactions of elements with other substances, e.g. acids and oxygen.

regeneration    →   regeneracija

Regeneration is the process of restoring an ion exchange medium to a usable state after exhaustion. The cation exchanger is normally regenerated with hydrochloric acid and the anion exchanger with sodium hydroxide.
