Nonpolar molecule is a molecule which has no separation of charge, so no positive or negative poles are formed. For example, the Cl2 molecule has no polar bonds (molecule with one type of atom), CH4 is a non-polar molecule (due to its symmetry). Nonpolar molecules do not dissolve in water as they cannot form hydrogen bonds (thus are hydrophobic) but do dissolve in lipids or fats (lipophilic).
Saponification is a proces of hydrolysis of esters using hot sodium hydroxide solution to produce the salt of a carboxylic acid. Saponification usually refers to the hydrolysis of esters of fatty acids to manufacture soaps.
Saturated fats are fats in foods that are solid at room temperature. They come chiefly from animal sources (beef, whole-milk dairy products, dark meat poultry) but also from tropical vegetable oils (coconut, palm).
Tantalum was discovered by Anders Ekeberg (Sweden) in 1802. The origin of the name comes from the Greek word Tantalos meaning father of Niobe in Greek mythology, (tantalum is closely related to niobium in the periodic table). It is rare, grey, heavy, hard but ductile, metal with a high melting point. Exposed surfaces form corrosion resistant oxide film. Attacked by HF and fused alkalis. Metal ignites in air. Tantalum always found with niobium. Chiefly occurs in the mineral tantalite. Often used as an economical substitute for platinum. Tantalum pentoxide is used in capacitors and in camera lenses to increase refracting power. It and its alloys are corrosion and wear resistant so it is used to make surgical and dental tools.
Trihydric alcohols (i.e. Triols) are organic compounds containing three hydroxyl groups. The simplest trihydric alcohol is 1,2,3-propane-triol, CH2(OH)CH(OH)CH2(OH), which is also known as glycerol (from the Greek glykys meaning sweet) or glycerin. Glycerol is commercially produced by the hydrolysis of fats.
Glycerol is a by-product in the soap industry and is recovered by suitable means.
Triglyceride is an ester of glycerol and three fatty acids. It is the main constituent of vegetable oil and animal fats. The fatty acids attached to the glycerol can be the same or different. Natural fatty acids found in plants and animals are typically composed only of even numbers of carbon atoms (usually from 16 to 20) due to the way they are bio-synthesized from acetyl CoA.
Unsaturated fats, which include one or more unsaturated fatty acid, are liquid at room temperature (oil) and come from plant oils such as olive, peanut, corn, sunflower, safflower, and soybean. The fish oils may also be high in unsaturated fatty acids.
