Minerals of the monoclinic crystal system are referred to three unequal axes. Two of these axes (a and c) are inclined toward each other at an oblique angle; these are usually depicted vertically. The third axis (b) is perpendicular to the other two and is called the ortho axis. The two vertical axes therefore do not intersect one another at right angles, although both are perpendicular to the horizontal axis.
a ≠ b ≠ c
α = γ = 90° ≠ β
Orthorhombic crystal system is also known as the rhombic system. Minerals of the orthorhombic crystal system are referred to three mutually perpendicular axes, each of which is of a different length than the others.
a ≠ b ≠ c
α = β = γ = 90°
Electrical resistivity, or specific resistance (ρ) is the electric field strength divided by the current density when there is no electromotive force in the conductor. Resistivity is an intrinsic property of a material. Materials with low resistivity are good conductors of electricity and materials with high resistivity are good insulators.
For a conductor of uniform cross section with area A and length L, and whose resistance is R, the resistivity is given by
The SI unit is Ω m.
Reynolds number (Re) is a dimensionless quantity used in fluid mechanics, defined by
where ρ is density, v is velocity, l is length, and η is viscosity.
Rhombohedral crystal system is also known as the trigonal system. The crystallographic axes used in this system are of equal length. None of the axes are perpendicular to any other axis.
a = b = c
α= β = γ ≠ 90°
Schrödinger equation is the basic equation of wave mechanics which, for systems not dependent on time, takes the form:
where Ψ is the wavefunction, V is the potential energy expressed as a function of the spatial coordinates, E its total energy, 2 is the Laplacian operator, h is Planck’s constant, and m is the mass.
Minerals of the tetragonal crystal system are referred to three mutually perpendicular axes. The two horizontal axes are of equal length, while the vertical axis is of different length and may be either shorter or longer than the other two.
a = b ≠ c
α = β = γ = 90°
Minerals of the triclinic crystal system are referred to three unequal axes, all of which intersect at oblique angles. None of the axes are perpendicular to any other axis.
a ≠ b ≠ c
α ≠ β ≠ γ ≠ 90°
The lever principle on which these scales are constructed is based on the law of physics that at equilibrium the force applied at one end of the lever multiplied by the length of the arm (distance from the fulcrum to the point where the force is applied) must be equal to the product of the force acting at the opposite end of the lever and the length of the other arm.
The unequal-arm balance is preferred for work when large amounts are to be weighed.
