Linear molecule is a molecule in which atoms are deployed in a straight line (under 180° angle). Molecules with an linear electron pair geometries have sp hybridization at the central atom. An example of linear electron pair and molecular geometry are carbon dioxide (O=C=O) and beryllium hydride BeH2.
Salinisation is the increase in salinity of fresh surface and ground water supplies.
Sand filtration is a frequently used and very robust method of removing suspended solids from water. The filtration medium consists of a multiple layer of sand with a variety in size and specific gravity. Sand filters can be supplied in different sizes and materials, both hand operated and fully automatically.
Low-density polyethylene (LDPE) is a thermoplastic polyolefin with a density of 0.910-0.940 g cm-3. It is a recyclable plastic used predominantly in film applications due to its toughness, flexibility and relative transparency. LDPE has a low melting point, making it popular for use in applications where heat sealing is necessary. Typically, LDPE is used to manufacture flexible films such as those used for plastic retail bags and garment dry cleaning and grocery bags.
Saponification is a proces of hydrolysis of esters using hot sodium hydroxide solution to produce the salt of a carboxylic acid. Saponification usually refers to the hydrolysis of esters of fatty acids to manufacture soaps.
Seaborgium was discovered by workers at the Nuclear Institute at Dubna (USSR) and by workers at the University of California, Berkeley (USA) in 1974. Named in honour of Glenn T. Seaborg, American nuclear chemist and Nobel prize winner. It is synthetic radioactive metal. Seaborgium was made by bombarding californium-249 with oxygen-18.
Lutetium was discovered by Georges Urbain (France) and independently by Carl Auer von Welsbach (Austria) in 1907. The origin of the name comes from the Greek word Lutetia meaning Paris. It is silvery-white and relatively stable in air, rare earth metal. Lutetium is found with ytterbium in gadolinite and xenotime. Stable lutetium nuclides can be used as catalysts in cracking, alkylation, hydrogenation, and polymerization.
Lyman series is the series of lines in the spectrum of the hydrogen atom which corresponds to transitions between the ground state (principal quantum number n = 1) and successive excited states.
