Lactase is an enzyme that catalyzes the hydrolysis of the disaccharide lactose (milk sugar) to the simple sugars glucose and galactose. Lactose intolerance is the inability to digest lactose. Symptoms can include abdominal pain, abdominal bloating, gas, diarrhea, and nausea.
