alcohol    →   alkohol

Alcohols are compounds in which a hydroxy group, -OH, is attached to a saturated carbon atom. Smaller members are water soluble, inflammable and are useful as organic solvents and fuels.

primary alcohol    →   primarni alkohol

Primary alcohols are alcohols where the hydroxyl group is attached to a primary carbon atom. Thus, it has the general structure, RCH₂OH, where R is a hydrogen atom or an alkyl group.

secondary alcohol    →   sekundarni alkohol

Secondary alcohol is one in which the hydroxyl group (-OH) is attached to a secondary carbon atom (i.e. a carbon atom which has one hydrogen atom attached to it).

tertiary alcohol    →   tercijarni alkohol

Tertiary alcohols are aliphatic alcohols in which the hydroxyl group (-OH) is attached to a tertiary carbon atom.

acetal    →   acetal

Acetals are organic compounds having the structure R₂C(OR’)₂ (R’ ≠ H). They are organic compounds formed by addition of alcohol molecules to aldehyde or ketone molecules. Originally, the term was confined to derivatives of aldehydes (one R = H), but it now applies equally to derivatives of ketones (neither R = H ). Mixed acetals have different R’ groups. The formation of acetals is reversible; acetals can be hydrolysed back to aldehydes (ketone) in acidic solutions.

Acetal, 1,1-diethoxyethane (CH₃CH(OC₂H₅)₂), is an organic compound, pleasant smelling, formed by addition of ethyl alcohol to ethanal (acetaldehyde). It is used as a solvent and in synthetic organic chemistry.

Acylaction reaction involves the introduction of an acyl group (RCO-) into a compound. An alkyl halide is reacted with an alcohol or a carboxylic acid anhydride e.g.

The introduction of an acetyl group (CH₃CO-) is acetylation, a process used for protecting -OH groups in organic synthesis.

aldehydes    →   aldehidi

Aldehydes are a broad class of organic compounds having the generic formula RCHO, and characterized by an unsaturated carbonyl group (C=O). They are formed from alcohols by either dehydrogenation or oxidation. Their chemical derivation is indicated by the name al(cohol) + dehyd(rogenation). An example of these distinct aromatic compounds is formaldehyde.

Ammonia is a colourless gas, NH₃, with a strong pungent odour. It is easily soluble in water and alcohol. Liquid ammonia has some similarity to water as it is hydrogen bonded and has a moderate dielectric constant, which permits it to act as an ionising solvent.

beer    →   pivo

Beer is a barley and hop flavored alcoholic beverage. Beer is made by fermenting a mixture of water, barley, hops and yeast with addition of special yeast. It contains from 2 % to 5 % of alcohol. Beer is light golden yellow to reddish to almost black.

Fermentation is a class of biochemical reactions that break down complex organic molecules (such as carbohydrates) into simpler materials (such as ethanol, carbon dioxide, and water). Fermentation reactions are catalyzed by enzymes.
