Acid salt is a compound formed by replacing hydrogen in an acid with a metal (or a radical that acts like a metal).
Glauber’s salt is sodium sulphate decahydrate (Na2SO4·10H2O). Loses water of hydration at 100 °C. Energy storage capacity is more than seven times that of water.
Mohr’s salt is a common name for double salt of iron(II) ammonium sulphate hexahydrate, [Fe(NH4)2 (SO4)2·6H2O].
Plain salt is a salt that contains only metal ions (or ammonium ions) and acid radical. It is created when all ions of hydrogen in an acid are replaced with ions of metal (or ammonium ions).
Salt fog chambers are designed for corrosive atmosphere testing. The samples being tested are inserted into the chamber and then the salt-containing solution is sprayed as a very fine fog mist over the samples. The temperature within the chamber is maintained constant (usually 35 °C). These test chambers are constructed of non-corrosive materials.
Salt bridge is a permeable material soaked in a salt solution that allows ions to be transferred from one container to another. The salt solution remains unchanged during this transfer.
Salt fog test is an accelerated corrosion test in which specimens are exposed to a fine mist of a solution usually containing sodium chloride (typically 5 %). Other contaminants can be added according to desired conditions. It is mainly used to determine the effectiveness of material finishes and protective coatings on materials. Salt-fog testing is also used to determine the effects of salt deposits on the electrical functions of electronic assemblies.
Salt water is the water of the sea and the ocean. This water contains a relatively high percentage of dissolved salt (about 35 g of salt per 1 000 g of sea water.). About 90 % of that salt would be sodium chloride, or ordinary table salt.
The salinity of ocean water varies. It is affected by such factors as melting of ice, inflow of river water, evaporation, rain, etc.
Salinisation is the increase in salinity of fresh surface and ground water supplies.
