Thermostat is a device which controls the heating or cooling of a substance, by turning the machinery on or off, in order to maintain a constant temperature.
Thermosetting plastics (thermosets) refer to a range of polymer materials that cure, through the addition of energy, to a stronger form. The energy may be in the form of heat (rubber), through a chemical reaction (two part epoxy), or irradiation. Thermoset materials are usually liquid or malleable prior to curing, and designed to be molded into their final form, or used as adhesive.
Thermoset polymer resins transformed into plastics or rubbers by cross-linking into a rigid, 3-D structure. A thermoset material cannot be melted and re-molded after it is cured.
Epoxy resins are thermosetting resins produced by copolymerising epoxide compounds with phenols (e.g. epichlorohydrin and bisphenol A). They contain ether linkages (-O-) and form a tight, cross-linked polymer network. Toughness, good adhesion, corrosive-chemical resistance, and good dielectric properties characterise epoxy resins. Most epoxy resins are two-part types which harden when blended.
Plastic is a material that can be shaped by the application of heat or pressure. Most are based on synthetic polymers although some are the product of natural substances (such as cellulose derivatives, but excluding the rubbers.). They are usually light and permanent solids, being also heat and electric isolators. If the materials soften again when reheated, they are said to be thermoplastic. If, after fashioning, they resist further applications of heat, they are said to be thermoset.
