For a non-absorbing medium, refractive index (n) is the ratio of the velocity of electromagnetic radiation (light) in vacuum to the phase velocity of radiation of a specified frequency in the medium.
The Living Planet Index (LPI) reflects changes in the health of the planet's ecosystems by tracking trends in nearly 8000 populations of vertebrate species. The LPI first calculates the annual rate of change for each species population in the dataset, then calculates the average change across all populations for each year from 1970, when data collection began, to 2007, the latest date for which data is available.
The Global LPI shows a decline of around 30 % from 1970 to 2007, based on 7953 populations of 2544 species of birds, mammals, amphibians, reptiles and fish.
Carbon has been known since ancient times. The origin of the name comes from the Latin word carbo meaning charcoal. Graphite form of carbon is a black, odourless, slippery solid. Graphite sublimes at 3825 °C. Diamond form is a clear or colored; an extremely hard solid. C60 is Buckminsterfullerine. Carbon black burns readily with oxidants. Carbon is made by burning organic compounds with insufficient oxygen. There are close to ten million known carbon compounds, many thousands of which are vital to organic and life processes. Radiocarbon dating uses the carbon-14 isotope to date old objects.
Refractometer is an optical device used from measurement of refractive index. A refractometer takes advantage of the fact that light bends as it passes through different materials. It can be used to measure the salinity of water or the amount of sugar in fresh grapes. Refractometers are available with or without automatic temperature compensation (ATC).
When using a conventional saltwater refractometer, a sample is placed on an optical prism in the sample window. As light shines through the sample, it is bent according to the salinity of the water, and casts a shadow on the scale that is visible through the eyepiece. Salinity is read directly through the eyepiece.
When a light ray comes on a boundary between two transparent media, it will be partly reflected and partly refracted. Both rays, reflected and refracted ray, lay in the plane of incidence. The angle of reflection is equal to the angle of incidence. The angle of refraction (Θ2) is related to the angle of incidence (Θ1) via Snell’s law:
where n1 and n2 are dimensionless constants - indexes of refraction of the two media.
Thallium was discovered by Sir William Crookes (England) in 1861. The origin of the name comes from the Greek word thallos meaning green twig or green shoot. It is soft grey metal that looks like lead. Tarnishes in moist air. Reacts in heated moist air and in acids. Compounds highly toxic by inhalation or ingestion. Cumulative effects. Thallium is found in iron pyrites. Also in crookesite, hutchinsonite and lorandite. Most is recovered from the by-products of lead and zinc refining. Its compounds are used in rat and ant poisons. Also for detecting infrared radiation.
Chemical elements are represented by their symbols, and chemical compounds are represented by a group of symbols of those elements from which the compound is composed. That group of symbols, which shows which atoms and in which number relation they are present in certain compound is called a chemical compound formula.
In a formula chemical symbols show which element is present in a certain compound, and its index shows how much of that element there is in a certain compound. From sulphuric acid formula H2SO4 we can see that one molecule of sulphuric acid consists of two atoms of hydrogen, one atom of sulphur and four atoms of oxygen.
Plexiglas is a hard, highly resistant, transparent, and almost unbreakable glass made from polyakryl resins. It is used for making windows for cars, planes etc.
When colourless liquids are used, parallax mistake is avoided by use of Schellbach’s burette. On the inside wall opposite to graduation scale it has a melted in ribbon from milky glass in the middle of which a blue line is found. The level of liquid is now spotted very easily because of light breaking in the meniscus blue line now looks like a double spike.
