Spontaneous process is a process that occurs without outside intervention. No external forces are required to keep the process going, although external forces may be required to get the process started. For example, the burning of wood is spontaneous once the fire is started. The combination of water and carbon dioxide to reform the wood and oxygen is NOT spontaneous! Spontaneity is independent of rate. To be spontaneous a process must increase the entropy of the universe.
Tear gases is the common name for substances which, in low concentrations, cause pain in the eyes, flow of tears and difficulty in keeping the eyes open. Tear gases are used mainly in military exercises and in riot control, etc., but have also been used as a method of warfare. Irritating gases have been used in war since ancient times but it was not until after the Second World War that a more systematic search for effective substances was started. Among a long series of substances, three have become of greater importance than the others. These substances are chloroacetophenone (codename CN), orto-chlorobenzylidene-malononitrile (CS) and dibenz(b,f)-1,4-oxazepine (CR).
Winkler’s method was once a common method used to determine the dissolved oxygen concentration by titration. Now rarely used due to the accuracy and low price of oxygen meters.
The water sample is first treated with excess manganese(II) sulfate solution and then with an alkaline solution of potassium iodide. The Mn(OH)2 initially formed reacts with the dissolved oxygen. The amount of MnO(OH)2 formed is determined by reaction with iodide ion in acidic solution. The iodine formed may be titrated against standard thiosulfate solution, using starch as an indicator.
Zeeman effect is the splitting of the lines in a spectrum when the source of the spectrum is exposed to a magnetic field. The effect was discovered in 1896 by the Dutch physicist Pieter Zeeman (1865-1943) as a broadening of the yellow D-lines of sodium in a flame held between strong magnetic poles.
The Zeeman effect has helped physicists determine the energy levels in atoms. In astronomy, the Zeeman effect is used in measuring the magnetic field of the Sun and of other stars.
