Wavenumber is the number of wave cycles per unit distance.
There are unfortunately two different definitions of the wavenumber.
Wavenumber, k, is most frequently defined as
with wavelength λ, phase velocity of wave vp, and angular frequency ω.
Less frequently it is defined simply as
One must be careful to note which definition is in use. Wavenumbers are used extensively in infrared spectroscopy, and usually have units of cm-1.
The regular array of atoms in a crystal is a three-dimensional diffraction grating for short-wavelength waves such as X-rays. The atoms are arranged in planes with interplanar spacing d. Diffraction maxima occur in the incident direction of the wave, measured from the surface of a plane of atoms, and the wavelength λ of the radiation satisfy Braggs’s law:
Xenon was discovered by Sir William Ramsay, Morris W. Travers (England) in 1898. The origin of the name comes from the Greek word xenos meaning stranger. It is heavy, colourless, odourless, noble gas. Reacts only with fluorine. Xenon is obtain from the small quantities in liquid air. Used for filling flash lamps and other powerful lamps. Electrical excitation of xenon produces a burst of brilliant white light. Also used in bubble chambers and modern nuclear power reactors.
Zeolite is a natural or synthetic hydrated aluminosilicate with an open three-dimensional crystal structure, in which water molecules are held in cavites in the latice. The water can be driven off by heating and the zeolite can then absorb other molecules of suitable size. Zeolites are used for separating mixtures by selective absorption.
Chitosan is a linear polysaccharide composed of randomly distributed N-acetyl D-glucosamine and D-glucosamine units. It can be easily derived from partial deacetylation of natural polymer chitin. At a minimum deacetylization level of 60 % (amount of free amino groups in the polymer) it is considered to be chitosan. Thanks to the amino groups of D-glucosamine, chitosan can be protonated and turned into polycation, which is one of the sources of unique properties of chitosan as biopolymer, like aqueous solubility, antibacterial properties, biodegradability with non-toxic residues and biocompatibility.
