Hydration is addition of water or the elements of water (i.e. H and OH) to a molecular entity. The term is also used in a more restricted sense for the process:

The types of macromolecules are natural and synthetic polymers, carbohydrates, lipids, proteins etc. Cellulose is a polysaccharide that is made up of hundreds, even thousands of glucose molecules strung together.
