Octane number is the assay mark of the liquid motor fuel which shows its anti-knock value. n-heptane, which detonates very easily, has o.n. 0, whereas isooctane, which does not detonate, has o.n. 100. By mixing these hydrocarbons we obtain fuels of different qualities, with values of octane number between 0 and 100.
Spin quantum number (ms) is the quantum number for the electron having values +1⁄2 and -1⁄2. Serves to differentiate between two electrons in the same orbital.
Froude number (Fr) is a dimensionless quantity used in fluid mechanics, defined by
where v is velocity, l is length, and g is acceleration due to gravity.
Strouhal number (Sr) is a dimensionless quantity used in fluid mechanics, defined by
where l is length, f is frequency, and v is velocity.
Transference number of an ion is the fraction of the total current that is carried by that ion during electrolysis. Different ions carry different fractions of the current because different ions move at different speeds under the same potential gradient. In general, a cation and an anion differ in the amount of current they can carry during electrolysis.
Nusselt number (Nu) is a dimensionless quantity used in fluid mechan-ics, defined by
where h is coefficient of heat transfer, l is length, and k is thermal conductivity.
Atoms can give one or more electrons for bond forming. The valence of any atom, which comes from stechiometrical relation of interbonded atoms, is called an oxidation number or an oxidation degree. Oxidation number of atoms in elementary state is zero. An atom of greater electronegativity has a negative, and an atom of lesser electronegativity has a positive oxidation number.
Péclet number (Pe) is a dimensionless quantity used in fluid mechanics, defined by

Prandtl number (Pr) is a dimensionless quantity used in fluid mechanics, defined by

Rayleigh number (Ra) is a dimensionless quantity used in fluid mechanics, defined by
