Tyndall’s effect → Tyndallov efekt
Tyndall’s effect occurs when light disperses on colloid particles. This phenomenon can be seen when a ray of light enters in dark room through a small hole. In the beam some dust particles of colloid dimensions can be seen sparkling.
ultracentrifuge → ultracentrifuga
Ultracentrifuge is a high-speed centrifuge used in the separation of colloidal or submicroscopic particles. The ultracentrifuge can generate forces thousands or millions of times stronger than the force of gravity.
unified atomic mass unit → unificirana atomska jedinica mase
Unified atomic mass unit (u or mu) is a unit of mass used in atomic, molecular, and nuclear science, defined as the mass of one atom of 12C divided by 12. Its approximate value is
universal gas constant → univerzalna plinska konstanta
Universal gas constant R has the value of 8.314 472(15) J K-1 mol-1. It corresponds to the volume work performed by one mole of gas heated by 1 K at standard pressure.
upper flammable limit → gornja granica zapaljivosti
Upper flammable limit (UEL) or the upper explosive limit is the maximum concentration of vapour or gas in air below which propagation of flame does not occur on contact with a source of ignition. The mixture is said to be too rich.
urethane → uretan
Urethane is actually a misnomer as applied to polyurethane foam. It is a colorless, crystalline substance used primarily in medicines, pesticides, and fungicides. Urethane is not used in the production of urethane polymers or foams. The urethanes of the plastics industry are so named because the repeating units of their structures resemble the chemical urethane.
vacuum distillation → vakuum destilacija
Vacuum distillation is distillation under reduced pressure. The depression in the boiling point of the substance distilled means that the temperature is lower, which may prevent the substance from decomposing.
valence shell → valentna ljuska
Valence shell is the shell corresponding to the highest value of principal quantum number in the atom. The valence electrons in this shell are on average farther from the nucleus than other electrons. They are often directly involved in chemical reaction.
van der Waals’ force → van der Waalsova sila
Van derWaals’ force is the weak attractive force between two molecules which arises from electric dipole interactions. It can lead to the formation of stable but weakly bound dimer molecules or clusters. They are named after the Dutch physicist Johannes van der Waals (1837-1923).
