Indium was discovered by Ferdinand Reich and Hieronymus Theodor Richter (Germany) in 1863. Named after the indicum (colour indigo), the colour it shows in a spectroscope. It is rare, very soft, silver-white metal. Stable in air and water. Dissolves in acids. Metal can ignite and burn. Indium is found in certain zinc ores. Used to coat high speed bearings and as an alloy that lowers the melting point of other metals. Relatively small amounts are used in dental items and in electronic semiconductors.
Ion-exchanger is a solid or liquid material containing ions that are exchangeable with other ions with a like charge that are present in a solution in which the material is insoluble. Ion-exchange resins consist of various copolymers having a cross-linked three-dimensional structure to which ionic groups have been attached.
Precipitate or the deposit is an insoluble solid formed by reactions in a solution. For example, when a solution of silver nitrate is added to a solution of sodium chloride, insoluble silver chloride precipitates.
Regeneration is the process of restoring an ion exchange medium to a usable state after exhaustion. The cation exchanger is normally regenerated with hydrochloric acid and the anion exchanger with sodium hydroxide.
Lithosphere (from the Greek for rocky sphere) is rigid, rocky outer layer of the Earth, consisting of the crust and the solid outermost layer of the upper mantle. The distinguishing characteristic of the lithosphere is not its composition but its flow properties. It floats on the asthenosphere, which is the heat-softened layer of the mantle below the lithosphere.
The lithospheric is not one continuous piece but is broken into about a dozen major separate rigid blocks, or plates, which move independently relative to one another. This movement of lithospheric plates over the asthenosphere is described as plate tectonics. When an oceanic plate and a continental plate meet, the heavier oceanic plate (composed mostly of basalt, specific gravity about 3.0 or peridotite, specific gravity about 3.3) subducts under the lighter continental plate (composed mostly of granite, specific gravity about 2.7).
The Living Planet Index (LPI) reflects changes in the health of the planet's ecosystems by tracking trends in nearly 8000 populations of vertebrate species. The LPI first calculates the annual rate of change for each species population in the dataset, then calculates the average change across all populations for each year from 1970, when data collection began, to 2007, the latest date for which data is available.
The Global LPI shows a decline of around 30 % from 1970 to 2007, based on 7953 populations of 2544 species of birds, mammals, amphibians, reptiles and fish.
Solutions are homogeneous mixtures of clean substances. Solutions contain two or more substances mixed in a state of molecular dispersion. Component which is found in solution in greater amount than other components is called a solvent and other components are called dissolved substances. Solution can be unsaturated, saturated and oversaturated.
Spectroscopy is the analysis of the lines of light emitted from excited atoms as the electrons drop back through their orbitals. These lines give the energy and distances of the electronic orbitals.
Solution is supersaturated when it contains greater quantity of dissolved substance in itself than it corresponds to solubility of that substance at that temperature. It is said to be in an unstable state, and by shaking the vessel containing that such a solution separation of salt surplus can occur.
