Standing waves occur when a travelling wave reflects from the fixed ends of a string, producing other waves moving in opposite direction. They are called standing waves because the energy in the string cannot move past the fixed ends, i.e. it stands in the string. In real strings, after some time, standing waves are eventually damped due to friction.
Sublimation is the conversion of a substance from its solid form directly to its gaseous form without the intervening liquid form. Dry ice (frozen carbon dioxide) sublimates at normal room temperature.
Hemiacetals are organic compounds having the general formula R2C(OH)OR’ (R’ ≠ H), derived from aldehydes or ketones by formal addition of an alcohol to the carbonyl group. Hemiacetals are generally unstable compounds. In some cases however, stable cyclic hemiacetals can be readily formed, especially when 5- and 6-membered rings are possible. In this case an intramolecular OH group reacts with the carbonyl group. Glucose and many other aldoses exist as cyclic hemiacetals whereas fructose and similar ketoses exist as cyclic hemiketals. Originally, the term was confined to derivatives of aldehydes (one R = H), but it now applies equally to derivatives of ketones (neither R = H).
Henry’s law was discovered in 1801 by the British chemist William Henry (1775-1836). At a constant temperature the mass of gas dissolved in a liquid at equilibrium is proportional to the partial pressure of the gas. It applies only to gases that do not react with the solvent.
where pi is the partial pressure of component i above the solution, xi is its mole fraction in the solution, and Kx is the Henry’s law constant (a characteristic of the given gas and solvent, as well as the temperature).
Hexagonal lattice has lattice points at the twelve corners of the hexagonal prism and at the centers of the two hexagonal faces of the unit cell. It has unit cell vectors a=b≠c and interaxial angles α=β=90° and γ=120°.
Superconductivity is the phenomenon in which certain metals, alloys, and compounds below a certain temperature, the transition point (Tc), lose electrical resistance and magnetic permeability, i.e. have infinite electrical conductivity (Meissner effect and Josephson effect).
Superconductor is a material that experiences a nearly total loss of electrical resistivity below a critical temperature Tc.
Supercooled liquids are liquids at temperatures below their normal freezing points.
