Percolation is a procedure of extraction of a material in special pipes through which a solvent is gradually released.
Permanent hardness in water is hardness due to the presence of the chlorides, nitrates and sulphates of calcium and magnesium, which will not be precipitated by boiling. The lime scale can build up on the inside of the pipe restricting the flow of water or causing a blockage. This can happen in industry where hot water is used.
Frasch proces is a method of obtaining sulphur from underground deposits using a tube consisting of three concentric pipes. Superheated steam is passed down the outer pipe to melt the sulphur, which is forced up through the middle pipe by compressed air fed through the inner tube. The steam in the outer casing keeps the sulphur molten in the pipe. It was named after the German-born American chemist Herman Frasch (1851-1914).
Plastic welding is the fusion of two pieces (usually of the same plastic type) with a directed hot air jet and plastic welding rod. Used increasingly for the manufacture of tanks, floats and other items. Useful for repair of pipework (either temporary or permanent).
Poly(vinyl chloride) or the PVC is hard and resistant homopolymer produced by the polymerization of the gas vinyl chloride [CH2CHCl]. The pure polymer is hard, brittle and difficult to process, but it becomes flexible when plasticizers are added. After mixing with plasticizers, stabilizers, and pigments, the resin may be fabricated by techniques such as calendering, molding, or extrusion into flexible articles such as raincoats, shower curtains, and packaging films. The resin is not plasticized for use in making rigid products such as water pipe, plumbing fittings, and phonograph records.
Sacrificial protection is the protection of iron or steel against corrosion by using a more reactive metal. Pieces of zinc or magnesium alloy are attached to pump bodies and pipes. The protected metal becomes the cathode and does not corrode. The anode corrodes, thereby providing the desired sacrificial protection. These items are known as sacrificial anodes and "attract" the corrosion to them rather than the iron/steel. The sacrificial anodes must be replaced periodically as they corrode.
The iron pipe will be connected to a more reactive metal such as magnesium through cooper wires, the magnesium will donate its electrons to the iron preventing it from rusting. Iron which is oxidises will immediately be reduced back to iron.
Teflon is a DuPont Company trademark for polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE). It was discovered in 1938 by R. J. Plunkett. Teflon has the lowest coefficient of friction of any solid material known to man. It is also used as a non-stick coating for pans and other cookware. Teflon is very unreactive, and so is often used in containers and pipework for reactive chemicals. Its melting point is 327 °C.
Three way safety bulb (pipette filler bulb) is used for pipeting. The attachment is placed over the mouth of the pipet. Squeeze the air valve (A) and the bulb simultaneously to empty the bulb of air. Place the tip of the pipet below the solution's surface in the beaker. Gradually squeeze the suction valve (S) to draw liquid into the pipet. If the level of the solution is not high enough, squeeze the air valve (A) and the bulb again to expel the air from the bulb. Draw up more liquid by squeezing the suction valve (S). When the liquid is above the specified volume, stop squeezing the suction valve (S). Do not remove the bulb from the pipet. Do not allow liquid to enter the pipet bulb.
