Faraday’s laws of electrolysis are two laws found by British chemist and physicist Michael Faraday (1791-1867) in his experiments on electrolysis:
1. The quantity of matter extracted on the electrode is proportional to the quantity of charge (Q = I·t) which has flown in electrolysis time.
where z = number of electrons changed in reaction and F = Faraday’s constant which equals 96 487 C mol-1.
2. The masses of the elements liberated by the same quantity of electricity are directly proportional to their chemical equivalents.
96 487 C will discharge 1 mol Ag and 1/2 mol Cu. The relevant half reactions are:
Gauss’ law describes the relation between charge and electric field in static situations, so it is equivalent to Coulomb’s law, which can be derived from Gauss’ law. Gauss’ law states that the net flux of electric field, Φ, through an imaginary closed surface, S, - a Gaussian surface - is equal to the net charge, q, inside that closed surface:
where electric flux Φ through Gaussian surface is given by:
ε0 is the permittivity constant and dS is a surface element.
Reaction mechanism is a list of all elementary reactions that occur in the course of an overall chemical reaction.
Reactivity series or activity series is a series of elements (usually metals) ranked by their reactivity degree, made for comparison of reactions of elements with other substances, e.g. acids and oxygen.
Relative atomic mass (Ar) is the ratio of the average mass per atom of the naturally occurring form of an element to 1/12 of the mass of nuclide 12C. The term atomic weight is synonymous with the relative atomic mass.
Short periods are the second and third period of Periodic table of the elements. They are called short because there are only eight elements in each.
Transmutation is the conversion of one element into another by a process taking place in the nucleus.
Half-cell is a part of galvanic cell in which oxidations or reduction of an element in contact with water or water solution one of its compounds.
Half-wave potential (E1/2) is a potential at which polarographic wave current is equal to one half of diffusion current (id). In a given supporting electrolyte, the half-wave potential is unique for each element and its different valence states and chemical forms. Observation of a current peak at a specific half-wave potential therefore identifies the chemical species producing the current.
X-ray spectrum is a set of characteristic X-ray frequencies or wavelengths produced by a substance used as a target in an X-ray tube. Each element has a characteristic X-ray spectrum, and there is a strong correlation between atomic number and the frequencies of certain lines in the X-ray spectrum.
