Gas is under normal (or standard) conditions when: p0 = 105 Pa and T0 = 273.15 K (0 °C). IUPAC recommends that the former use of the pressure of 1 atm as standard pressure (equivalent to 101 325 Pa) should be discontinued. At these conditions, the molar volume of gas Vm0 is 0.022 711 m3 (22.711 L).
Potentiometric titration is a volumetric method in which the potential between two electrodes is measured (referent and indicator electrode) as a function of the added reagent volume. Types of potentiometric titrations for the determination of analytes in photoprocessing solutions include acid-base, redox, precipitation, and complexometric.
Potentiometric titrations are preferred to manual titrations, since they are more accurate and precise. They are also more easily adapted to automation, where automated titration systems can process larger volumes of samples with minimal analyst involvement.
A titration curve has a characteristic sigmoid curve. The part of the curve that has the maximum change marks the equivalence point of the titration. The first derivative, ΔE/ΔV, is the slope of the curve, and the endpoint occurs at the volume, V', where ΔE/ΔV has the maximum value.
Square pyramidal is a molecular shape that results when there are five bonds and one lone pair on the central atom in the molecule. Bromine pentafluoride (BrF5) has the geometry of a square pyramid, with fluorine atoms occupying five vertices, one of which is above the plane of the other four. This molecule is made up of six equally spaced sp3d2 (or d2sp3) hybrid orbitals arranged at 90° angles. The shape of the orbitals is octahedral. Because of the high symmetry of the octahedral arrangement, all six positions are equivalent, so it does not matter in which position in the drawing we put the lone pair. The remaining four atoms connected to the central atom give the molecule a square planar shape.
Stoichiometry is the relative proportions elements from compounds or in which substances react. Every chemical reaction has its characteristic proportions. For example, when methane unites with oxygen in complete combustion, 1 mol of methane requires 2 mol of oxygen.
At the same time, 1 mol of carbon dioxide and 2 mol of water are formed as reaction products.
Alternatively, 16 g of methane and 64 g of oxygen produce 44 g of carbon dioxide and 36 g of water.
The stoichiometric relationship between the products and reactants can be used to in calculations.
Titar (T) is a mass of titrated matter which is equivalent to 1 cm3 of solution. It is shown as T = 2.356 mg HCl / 1.0 cm3 NaOH, 0.1000 moldm-3, and it is usually shown in a table form. If the concentration of used standard solution (c) differs from one outlined in the table data (c0), the factor of correction (f) is induced
Titar is usually used in industrial operational laboratories where from titar tables mass or percentage of the ingredient in question is directly read.
Winkler’s method was once a common method used to determine the dissolved oxygen concentration by titration. Now rarely used due to the accuracy and low price of oxygen meters.
The water sample is first treated with excess manganese(II) sulfate solution and then with an alkaline solution of potassium iodide. The Mn(OH)2 initially formed reacts with the dissolved oxygen. The amount of MnO(OH)2 formed is determined by reaction with iodide ion in acidic solution. The iodine formed may be titrated against standard thiosulfate solution, using starch as an indicator.
