Alabaster is a monoclinic mineral form of hydrated calcium sulphate. It is a pure fine-grained translucent form of gypsum. CaSO₄·2H₂O.

alkaloid    →   alkaloid

Alkaloids are basic nitrogen organic compounds (mostly heterocyclic) derived from plants and having diverse pharmacological properties. Alkaloids include morphine, cocaine, atropine, quinine, and caffeine, most of which are used in medicine as analgesics or anaesthetics. Some alkaloids are poisonous, e.g. strychnine and coniine, and colchicine inhibit cell division.

Aluminate is a salt formed when aluminium hydroxide or y-alumina is dissolved in solutions of strong bases, such as sodium hydroxide. Aluminates exist in solutions containing the aluminate ion, commonly written [Al(OH)₄]^-. In fact the ion probably is a complex hydrated ion and can be regarded as formed from a hydrated Al³⁺ ion by removal of four hydrogen ions:

Other aluminates and polyaluminates, such as [Al(OH)₆]^3- and [(HO)₃AlOAl(OH)₃]^2-, are also present.

Ampere (A) is the SI base unit of electric current.

The ampere is that constant current which, if maintained in two straight parallel conductors of infinite length, of negligible circular cross-section, and placed 1 metre apart in vacuum, would produce between these conductors a force equal to 2×10^-7 newton per metre of length.

Ampholyte is a substance than can act as either an acid, in the presence of a strong base, or a base, when in the presence of a strong acid.

AMU    →   AMU

AMU or atomic mass unit is a unit of mass used to express relative atomic masses. It is equal to 1/12 of the mass of an atom of the isotope carbon-12 and is equal to 1.66 033×10^-27 kg. This unit superseded both the physical and a chemical mass unit based on oxygen-16 and is sometimes called the unified mass unit or the dalton.

An anionic resin has negative ions built into its structure and therefore exchanges positive ions. In an anion exchange, the side groups are ionised basic groups, such as (-NH₂, -NRH, -NR₂, -NR₃⁺) to which anions OH^- are attached. The exchange reaction is one in which different anions in the solution displace the OH^- from the solid.

Barytes is an orthorhombic mineral, form barium sulphate, BaSO₄, the chief of barium. It is usually white but my also be yellow, grey or brown. Large deposits occur in Andalusia, Spain and in the USA.
