Temperature is a measure to the average kinetic energy of its molecules. The SI unit in which thermodynamic temperature is expressed is the kelvin (K).
Global hectares (gha) are hectares with world-average productivity for all productive land and water areas in a given year. Because different land types have different productivity, a global hectare of, for example, cropland, would occupy a smaller physical area than the much less biologically productive pasture land, as more pasture would be needed to provide the same biocapacity as one hectare of cropland ("ordinary" hectare is an area equal to a square that is 100 meters on each side, so a hectare has 10 000 m2). Global hectare is unit for measuring our demands on the Earth (ecological footprint) and the ability of the Earth to supply our demands (biocapacity).
Glycogen (animal starch) is a polysaccharide that serves the same energy storage function in animals that starch serves in plants. Dietary carbohydrates not needed for immediate energy are converted by the body to glycogen for long term storage (principally in muscle and liver cells). Like amylopectin found in starch, glycogen is a polymer of α(1→4)-linked subunits of glucose, with α(1→6)-linked branches. Glycogen molecules are larger than those of amylopectin (up to 100 000 glucose units) and contain even more branches. Branch points occur about every 10 residues in glycogen and about every 25 residues in amylopectin. The branching also creates lots of ends for enzyme attack and provides for rapid release of glucose when it is needed.
Graduated pipettes (Mohr pipette) have a scale divided into units of one and of 1/10th of a millilitre. Because of their wide necks it is less accurate than the volumetric pipette. They are used when taking volume of solutions in which accuracy does not have to be very high. By sucking in (with mouth, propipette or a water pump) the liquid is pulled in a little bit above the mark and the opening of the pipet is closed with a forefingertip. Outer wall of pipet is wiped and, with a slight forefinger loosening, the liquid is released until it reaches the mark 0. A pipette is emptied out by lifting the forefinger off and letting the liquid flow out of the pipette freely.
Thermal conductivity (Λ) is rate of heat flow divided by the area and by the temperature gradient.
In a hexagonal close-packed (hcp) arrangement of atoms, the unit cell consists of three layers of atoms. The top and bottom layers (a) contain six atoms at the corners of a hexagon and one atom at the center of each hexagon. The middle layer (b) contains three atoms nestled between the atoms of the top and bottom layers, hence, the name close-packed. The hexagonal close packed structure can be made by piling layers in the a-b-a-b-a-b... sequence.
Hexagonal lattice has lattice points at the twelve corners of the hexagonal prism and at the centers of the two hexagonal faces of the unit cell. It has unit cell vectors a=b≠c and interaxial angles α=β=90° and γ=120°.
Kelvin (K) is the SI base unit of thermodynamic temperature.
The kelvin, unit of thermodynamic temperature, is the fraction 1/273.16 of the thermodynamic temperature of the triple point of water. The unit was named after the British scientist Sir. W.
