Series of compounds which have a common general formula and in which each member differs from the next member by a constant unit, which is the methylene group (-CH₂-) is called the homologous series. Members of a homologous series are called homolog.

An example of the homologous series with some of their homologs are given below. Straight chain alkanes having general formula C_nH_2n+2

invert sugar    →   invertni šećer

Invert sugar is a mixture of equal parts of glucose and fructose resulting from the hydrolysis of sucrose (saccharose). The name stemming from the fact that it rotates of plane polarized light in the opposite direction of sucrose. Sucrose is dextrorotatory - it rotates polarized light clockwise ([α]_D = +66.5°). Invert sugar rotates the plane of the polarized light counterclockwise ([α]_D = -22°) due to the strongly levorotatory nature of fructose ([α]_D = -92°).

Homemade artificial honey (invert sugar syrup): Dissolve two parts of household sugar (1 kg) with stirring in one part of water (0.5 kg) in a saucepan over low heat. Add 1 g of citric acid or the juice of one lemon to the mixture. Bring the ingredients to a slow boil. It can take anywhere between 15 minutes to 1 hour. The end result is sticky, golden syrup. Let it sit at room temperature until it is cool.

Ion selective electrode (ISE) is an electrode or electrode assembly with a potential that is dependent on the concentration of an ionic species in the test solution and is used for electroanalysis. Ion-selective electrodes are often membrane type electrodes.

Ketones are compounds in which a carbonyl group is bonded to two carbon atoms: R₁R₂C=O (neither R may be H). They are derived by oxidation of secondary alcohols. The simplest member of the series is acetone, (CH₃)₂CO.

logarithmic scale    →   logaritamska skala

Logarithmic scale is the one in which values of 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, in fact represents values of 1, 10, 100, 1 000, 10 000. Logarithmic scales are often used to simplify graphs and tables, where otherwise changes of data at the lower end of the scale would be difficult to distinguish (e.g. a graph axis which would normally have values from 1 - 1 000 000 is shown by values of 1 - 7). An example of a logarithmic scale is the pH scale.

Methionine is neutral amino acids with polar side chains. It is one of the two sulfur-containing amino acids. Methionine is a fairly hydrophobic amino acid and typically found buried within the interior of a protein. It can form stacking interactions with the aromatic moieties of tryptophan, phenylalanine, and tyrosine. It is an essential amino acid, which means that humans cannot synthesize it, so it must be ingested.

Osmotic pressure (Π) is the excess pressure necessary to maintain osmotic equilibrium between a solution and a pure solvent separated by a membrane permeable only to the solvent. In an ideal dilute solution

pH is a convenient measure of the acid-base character of a solution, usually defined by

where c(H⁺) is the concentration of hydrogen ions in moles per litre. The more precise definition is in terms of activity rather than concentration.

A solution of pH 0 to 7 is acid, pH of 7 is neutral, pH over 7 to 14 is alkaline.

Pickling is a process to chemically remove scale or oxide from steel to obtain a clean surface. When applied to bars or coils prior to bright drawing, the steel is immersed in a bath of dilute sulphuric acid (w(H₂SO₄) = 10 %) heated to a temperature of around 80 °C. An inhibitor is added to prevent attack and pitting of the cleaned metal. After pickling, a washing process takes place followed by immersion in a lime-water bath to neutralise any remaining acid.

Picnometer is a special glass flask which is used for determining a relative density of liquids using the weight of a known volume. It usually has a glass faceted cork which is pierced in the centre like a thin capillary through which surplus of liquid runs out.
